THANDI GETS A BIG SURPRISE

Next morning early, princess Thandi with her maidens, went to fetch water at the river as well to bathe as usual. But this time, arriving at the river, she saw a strange creature was drinking on the other side.

As soon as the creature caught sight of her with her company, it darted off, then in a loud voice, while it climbed a tree, it shouted at the girl.

"You are ugly."

She stood wide-mouthed, gazing after this creature climbing the tall tree. Thandi had never seen such a being before. Furthermore, it spoke, then worse than that, it insulted her! Also, as a Chief's daughter, she had never been spoken to in such a manner before.

"Who do you think you are? I am beautiful. Ask these maidens. Ask my father, he is the Chief."

"Ugly, ugly, I said. That old goat would not know something beautiful if it stared him straight in the face. I, of course, am beautiful."

"My father will sort you out. I am going to tell him right now."

The princess was so upset she left off bathing to hurry home, calling out to her father, as soon as she thought he was in earshot.

"Father, I have seen a beast with a long tail which ran away up a tree, shouting nasty things at me. It also insulted you, my father!"

The Chief calmed Thandi down, inviting her to sit next to him. Then he asked what the nasty beast said and what it looked like. After describing the creature, the Chief had no trouble identifying it.

"That is a kenge, my beautiful daughter. Do not let it trouble you. He has a bad mouth on him, that one. I have plans for him. Let us go, show me where it is. When I see where he is for myself, I will arrange to have him taken care of for good."

They went together, taking with them a small group of warriors in the event they saw a chance to catch the kenge. When he saw it, the Chief recognized the kenge at once. But it was up in the topmost branches, perhaps sensing the danger. It had gone where no human climber could reach it, with any kind of safety. Also, he did not want to kill it. The Chief was greatly pleased this happened because he had been looking for this kenge for some time.
